What is a bar-retained denture?
A bar-retained denture involves dental implant treatment. Each implant is made up of a small tiny screw that is surgically implanted into your jaw. The screws are attached to a metal framework that hovers about the gum and follows the curvature of your jaw. The denture fits over the bar and is securely clipped into place using a series of attachments.
Bar-retained dentures require the use of three or four implants. The bar allows for the denture to be removed while providing an increased level of support. Patients with bar-retained dentures will have to clean the bar and gums once the denture is removed.
The Implant Process
It all starts with a consultation appointment. Our specialists will ensure you are a proper candidate through a series of examinations. We use diagnostic tools like x-rays and digital scans to create a comprehensive image of your bone. To receive dental implants, a patient must have the appropriate bone density and quantity. Patients who have used traditional dentures for some years are likely to have experienced bone deterioration. We may need to perform a bone graft or sinus lift to properly support the implants.
Once you are ready for surgery, we will remove any remaining teeth and place each implant. In some cases, a healing cap can be immediately placed over the implant to guide the gum tissue. You will be given a temporary denture after the procedure. This will protect the implants during the healing process. Patients with existing dentures can have them adjusted to accommodate the healing caps.
For the next several months, you will undergo osseointegration, a process where the bone and implant fuse together. This is crucial to the success of the implants. Once they have properly healed, we can schedule your second appointment.
During your second appointment, we will place abutments—the support structures used to secure the bar. An impression will be taken and used to create the framework and prosthetic teeth. Once the restoration is complete, we can install your new denture, and make any final adjustments.
